Collaboration targets what Bifrost believes will be the industry’s first 50G DWDM SFP56 Quasi-Coherent pluggable transceiver, combining extended reach, low latency, and full C-Band coverage in a compact, DSPfree form factor.
Malaga, Spain – September 18, 2026, Bifrost Communications, a pioneer in Quasi-Coherent optical transmission technology, today announced a strategic collaboration with Sumitomo Electric Device
Innovation to integrate their advanced semi-tunable laser technology into Bifrost’s innovative 50G QuasiCoherent (QC) optical transceiver platform.
The collaboration is focused on developing what Bifrost Communications believes will be the industry’s first and only 50G DWDM SFP56 Quasi-Coherent pluggable transceiver, delivering a unique combination of extended reach, low latency, reduced power consumption, and high-density deployment in a compact SFP56
form factor.
By leveraging Sumitomo Electric’s semi-tunable laser architecture, the new platform will enable full C-Band coverage through only five stock-keeping units (SKUs), significantly simplifying inventory management and network operations compared to traditional DWDM solutions. The integrated solution preserves the low power, DSP-free architecture that differentiates Bifrost’s Quasi-Coherent technology while adding unprecedented deployment flexibility.

Advancing 50G Optical Connectivity
Bifrost’s patented Quasi-Coherent technology was developed to bridge the gap between conventional IMDD optics and traditional coherent transmission systems. While coherent solutions rely on power-intensive digital signal processors (DSPs), Bifrost’s approach achieves superior chromatic dispersion tolerance, extended reach, and DWDM compatibility without the complexity, latency, or power consumption associated with DSP-based architectures.
The addition of Sumitomo Electric Device Innovation’ semi-tunable laser technology further enhances this value proposition by bringing wavelength flexibility traditionally associated with coherent systems into a compact, low-power, DSP-free platform.
Together, the technologies create a new category of pluggable optical solutions designed to address growing bandwidth demands across mobile transport, edge networks, access infrastructure, and emerging AI-driven architectures.
